In-house Laboratory Capabilities: Orange Park & Savannah |
Southeast Veterinary Oncology has a fully-equipped laboratory that allows for important blood tests to be performed with immediate results in a timely manner. SEVO currently uses the Idexx Lasercyte CBC machine to obtain vital information regarding a patient’s red cell parameters, white cell counts, and platelet values. SEVO also utilizes a VetTest Chemistry analyzer to evaluate and monitor your pet’s internal organ function, basic electrolyte values, and protein levels, for example. Our Stat-Lytes machine is available to provide immediate results of blood gas levels, ionized calcium and advanced electrolyte monitoring. All of these tools are very important in our fight against cancer by providing our doctors with current and accurate information regarding your pet’s health. |
Microscope: Orange Park & Savannah |
SEVO’s Olympus double-headed microscope allows for two people to evaluate a microscopic image simultaneously. This provides us the ability for clients to view a sample with the doctor and it allows two doctors to consult on a sample together. This microscope allows our oncologist to view samples they have taken prior to sending them to the pathologist and for rapid in-house evaluation of masses. |
Chemotherapy Hood: Orange Park & Savannah |
To ensure optimal safety for our staff, patients, and clients, SEVO uses a biological safety cabinet when reconstituting, mixing and drawing up chemotherapy for administration. This Class II Type 2A biological safety cabinet allows SEVO staff to work with the chemotherapy inside the cabinet, drastically reducing the risk of coming into contact or risking exposure to chemotherapy drugs. The cabinet filters the air to prevent accidental inhalation of the chemotherapy drugs and overall provides a safe, clean environment for all of SEVO’s employees and visitors. |
Radioactive Iodine (I-131): Orange Park & Savannah) |
SEVO offers radioactive iodine therapy for the treatment of hyperthyroidism in cats and dogs. I-131 is a radioactive isotope that specifically targets overactive thyroid tissue that causes hyperthyroidism. Radioiodine is given as a quick injection and requires that patients stay at SEVO for 3-4 days after treatment. SEVO has designed an I-131 suite that enables us to effectively monitor and treat patients with hyperthyroidism. This suite is specially designed with lead shielding to provide for maximum safety. Our feline patients enjoy cozy cat condos during their stay. Our radioactive iodine facility has been licensed to treat patients with much larger doses of radioiodine as well, for management of more aggressive diseases, such as canine and feline thyroid malignancies. |
Linear Accelerator: Orange Park |
A linear accelerator (LINAC) is the device most commonly used for external beam radiation therapy treatments for cancer treatment. The linac uses microwave technology to accelerate electrons in a part of the accelerator called the “wave guide.” This either emits these electrons for treatment or allows these electrons to collide with a heavy metal target producing high energy x-rays, depending on which type of energy is prescribed for treatment. The beam comes out of a part of the accelerator called a gantry, which rotates around the patient. The patient lies on a moveable treatment couch and lasers are used to make sure the patient is in the proper position. Radiation can be delivered to the tumor from any angle by rotating the gantry and moving the treatment couch.
Here at SEVO, we have a Varian 2100 C/D linear accelerator capable of producing a wide variety of electron and photon energies to treat multiple tumor types. SEVO takes great pride in being the only facility for veterinary radiation therapy in the region. |
Digital Radiology: Orange Park & Savannah |
SEVO now has digital radiology, the most advanced form of radiology available. Our digital radiology system by Eklin is very user friendly and allows us to take high-quality radiographs with efficiency and digital image quality. This system uses a Cannon radiology plate and E-film technology. This system is compatible with other types of imaging, such as CT scans, MRI, and PET scans. By eliminating the need to develop individual films, our radiology system provides an efficient means of creating, storing, retrieving, and reviewing images. Your pet’s images can be easily copied and sent home with you on CD format, and can be emailed to a radiologist for specialist review. |
Luxury Runs: Orange Park |
SEVO provides unique services that attract families from all over the country. Because of the great distances that some patients travel for treatment at SEVO, we have created a cozy atmosphere for those patients that stay with us for the duration of their treatment. To provide our patients with the most comfortable stay possible, SEVO has designed special luxury runs. These luxury runs provide ample space for even the largest pets. Each run is outfitted with porcelain tile, a personal ceiling fan with night lights, and a bed that folds down to provide maximum comfort. Clients are welcome to bring their own bedding or SEVO will be happy to provide it. |
